Crystal Lake horror series explores Friday the 13th origins
The horror prequel series ‘Crystal Lake’ has premiered on Peacock and HBO Max, expanding the ‘Friday the 13th’ franchise. Set in the early 1970s, the eight-episode series focuses on Pamela Voorhees, played by Linda Cardellini, and her descent into madness following the drowning of her son, Jason (played by Callum Vinson), at Camp Crystal Lake.
Showrunner Brad Caleb Kane describes the series as a psychological exploration of grief and the origins of the iconic slasher mythos. The production, a collaboration between A24 and NBCUniversal, introduces new elements to the lore, including a mysterious project called ‘Argonaut’ involving Bellflower Chemical and a character named Elias Wittering, played by Hamish Linklater, who is revealed to be Jason’s father.
The series aims to provide a more empathetic look at the Voorhees family while maintaining the franchise’s signature gore. Costume designer Cristina Spiridakis noted the intentional use of period-accurate silhouettes, including a reimagined version of Pamela’s iconic blue sweater.
