A24's 'Backrooms' Becomes Studio's Highest‑Grossing Film with $212 M Worldwide
The psychological‑horror film Backrooms, directed by YouTuber Kane Parsons and produced on an estimated $10 million budget, has become A24’s highest‑grossing release. Within ten days of its May 29 U.S. debut, the movie earned $212.6 million globally, surpassing the previous studio record set by Marty Supreme. The box‑office takings include $135 million from North America and $77 million from international markets across 57 territories.
Backrooms opened with an $81 million domestic weekend – the biggest debut in A24’s history – and, despite a 70 % drop in its second weekend, still generated $25.8 million from over 3,500 theatres. The film set opening‑weekend records in 41 countries and reached the number‑one spot in 42 markets, including the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand and Italy. Latin America emerged as its strongest overseas region, contributing $24.2 million. The movie is scheduled for release in India on 12 June 2026.
Studio co‑founder Peter Chernin noted that the success reflects a shift toward youth‑oriented IPs, stating, “Backrooms resonated because it’s an IP that belongs to a younger generation, not a traditional franchise.”
