A24’s ‘Backrooms’ crosses $100 million domestic, becoming studio’s highest‑grossing film

The low‑budget horror film “Backrooms,” directed by 20‑year‑old YouTuber Kane Parsons, reached $100 million at the domestic box office in just six days, marking the fastest‑growing indie release in A24’s history. Its opening weekend delivered $81.4 million in the United States and Canada, the studio’s biggest debut, and the film’s total domestic haul topped $97 million, surpassing the previous A24 record set by “Marty Supreme.”

Globally the picture has earned between $144 million and $155 million, far exceeding its roughly $10 million budget. The success made “BackroomsA24’s highest‑grossing movie ever in North America and positioned Parsons as the youngest filmmaker to top the domestic box office. Production partners include Chernin Entertainment, Blumhouse‑Atomic Monster and 21 Laps, and audience data show a strong tilt toward viewers under 35.

The achievement reflects a broader trend of creator‑led films finding mainstream theatrical audiences, following earlier YouTube‑originated hits such as “Iron Lung” and “Obsession.”
