A28 highway closed near Hooghalen due to vehicle fire

A vehicle fire on the A28 highway caused significant traffic delays near Hooghalen on Sunday, August 16. The car, which was parked on the shoulder, burned completely, causing parts of the roadside vegetation to catch fire. The highway was closed between the Assen-Zuid and Westerbork exits, resulting in a traffic jam of approximately two kilometers. No injuries were reported, and the cause of the fire remains unknown.

Other emergency incidents reported in the region include a house fire in Eelde, likely caused by smoldering barbecue remains in a garage, and a scooter fire in a garden in Groningen. Additionally, a pile of waste caught fire in Delfzijl, producing dark smoke clouds and breaking windows at a nearby residence. In Oude Pekela, a collision involving three vehicles occurred on Apollolaan.
