A3 Transylvania Motorway to include emergency aircraft landing strip

A three-kilometer section of the A3 Transylvania Motorway, specifically the Chiribiș – Biharia segment in Bihor County, is being equipped to serve as an emergency landing strip and aircraft parking area.

The construction is being carried out by the Selina Group, owned by Beniamin Rus. The facility includes a specialized parking area for aircraft and a straight three-kilometer stretch between km 50+700 and 53+700 designed for emergency landings. The project involves an extension of the platform with a contract valued at 84.5 million lei (excluding VAT), with completion expected by April 2027.

Gabriel Budescu, Director General of the National Company for Road Infrastructure Investments (CNIR), previously noted that such infrastructure could be utilized if military bases or airports become temporarily unavailable. While providing this capability, the motorway will remain functional for standard vehicle traffic without significant visible changes to daily commuters.
