A400M Atlas deployed as water bomber to fight French forest fires
Europe's largest military transport aircraft, the A400M Atlas, has been modified to carry a 22‑ton water tank for aerial firefighting. Engineers completed the conversion in an emergency effort and the first aircraft was flown from a base near Bordeaux within 24 hours of completion. The A400M can release up to 4,400 gallons of water in a single drop, covering a ground strip of more than 1,300 feet.
The deployment supports French authorities battling widespread forest fires that have forced the evacuation of roughly 300,000 people. President Emmanuel Macron described the blazes as France's greatest challenge since World War II. Airbus CEO Guillaume Faury said the company accelerated its fire‑fighting programme in response to what he called an unprecedented threat to Europe.
