A7 motorway expansion south of Elbe Tunnel completed

The expansion of the A7 motorway south of the Elbe Tunnel in Hamburg has reached a major milestone. After six years of construction, the section has been widened to eight lanes and is scheduled for official release.

The project involved closing a gap in the Elbmarsch elevated highway, which had been designed for expansion over 50 years ago. Technical reinforcements were made to the support pillars and foundations to accommodate the wider structure. While the expansion is complete, traffic is expected to resume on the section starting Monday morning following weekend closures for final works.

The original structure, opened in 1975, has an estimated remaining lifespan until 2045, at which point officials will evaluate the necessity of a complete replacement.
