A72 motorway between Leipzig and Chemnitz to open in October

The A72 motorway section between Leipzig and Chemnitz is scheduled to open for single-lane traffic this October. This development marks the completion of the final missing segment between the A38 and Rötha, allowing for continuous travel from Hof to Leipzig for the first time.

The project is one of the most extensive construction undertakings in the state of Saxony in recent decades. Originally conceived as a road renewal project in the 1990s, the scope expanded in 2002 to include a 64-kilometer extension from Chemnitz to Leipzig. Although completion was initially targeted for the 2006 World Cup, the project has faced over 20 years of delays.
