Schwarz Group expands digital infrastructure with multi-billion euro data center investments

The Schwarz Group, owner of Lidl and Kaufland, is significantly expanding its digital infrastructure to establish a European alternative to US cloud providers like Amazon, Microsoft, and Google. Through its digital division, Schwarz Digits, the group is investing approximately 5.6 billion euros in a new data center near Rostock in Dummerstorf. This facility is expected to reach a capacity of 240 megawatts by 2033, with potential expansion to 1 gigawatt by 2045.

This project follows a massive 11 billion euro investment in another data center located in Lübbenau, Brandenburg. Additionally, Schwarz Digits has opened a new 15.5-hectare technology campus in Bad Friedrichshall, designed to house up to 5,500 employees and serve as a central hub for cloud, cybersecurity, and AI development.

While these investments aim to bolster European digital sovereignty, they also face challenges regarding high energy and water consumption. The group intends to power the Rostock site using renewable energy, utilizing its proximity to offshore wind power connections.
