A9 Pyhrnautobahn crash near Mautern, Austria

On the evening of Monday, 29 June 2026, a car travelling north‑bound on the A9 Pyhrnautobahn between the Mautern and Kalwang interchanges spun out after a brief, intense thunderstorm. The vehicle aquaplaned, struck the right safety barrier and its engine block was torn from the chassis, leaving the wreckage across both lanes.

The driver escaped the vehicle, received first‑aid from volunteer firefighters of Kalwang and Mautern, and was later taken to the University Hospital in Kalwang. The accident prompted a full closure of the highway for roughly one and a half hours while fire brigades, the Autobahnpolizei Trieben, the Red Cross, ASFINAG and a private towing firm secured the scene, cleared debris and recovered the wreck.
