AA reports rise in vehicle computer-related breakdowns
Technical issues involving the Body Control Module (BCM) have become one of the top five causes of vehicle breakdowns in the UK, according to a report by the AA. Since 2020, breakdowns related to this onboard computer—which manages systems such as lights, windows, wipers, and central locking—have doubled to more than 36,000 incidents annually.
Causes for these electronic faults include computer glitches, driver error, damaged entry key chips, or improper garage repairs. While still less frequent than issues with batteries or tyres, these technical failures are increasing rapidly. To address this, the AA has introduced a ‘Fault Finder’ option through its mobile mechanics service, allowing technicians to perform repairs at a driver's home or workplace.
