Aachen hosts FEI World Equestrian Championships amid welfare debate

The FEI World Equestrian Championships are currently underway in Aachen, featuring 650 athletes from 35 countries and 800 horses competing across six disciplines. While the event maintains a strong tradition in the region, it faces ongoing scrutiny regarding animal welfare.

A non-representative survey of 971 readers showed a divided opinion on whether such championships remain appropriate in 2026. Of those surveyed, 552 supported the event, citing its tradition and spectator appeal, while 419 opposed it, arguing that horses should no longer be used for sporting entertainment.

Animal welfare concerns have intensified due to a heatwave in Aachen, with temperatures reaching up to 35 degrees Celsius. While animal rights organizations have called for a pause in competitions, the Aachen-Laurensberger Rennverein (ALRV) and local veterinary authorities stated that heat mitigation measures are being implemented for the horses.
