AADE implements digital aircraft tracking to combat tax evasion

The Independent Authority for Public Revenue (AADE) in Greece is implementing a new digital strategy to combat tax evasion and smuggling. A key component of this initiative is the acquisition of an aircraft monitoring platform and a Geographic Information System (GIS) for the Independent Department of the Central Chamber of Operations (DEOS). For an annual subscription of 5,580 euros, authorities will gain real-time access to track the movements of both private and commercial aircraft within and outside Greek territory, using unusual flight paths as risk filters for targeted inspections.

Simultaneously, AADE is accelerating audits on thousands of older tax cases to prevent them from expiring due to statutes of limitations. Priority is being given to the 2020 tax year, where income and VAT cases must be processed before the end of 2026. The agency is also utilizing advanced algorithms to identify discrepancies between reported income and actual consumer spending, specifically targeting individuals who report low annual incomes but maintain high-value lifestyles. The agency plans to issue at least 12,000 electronic notifications to citizens regarding past tax liabilities and is developing a new digital portal for reporting financial crimes.
