Greece's Independent Authority for Public Revenue announces digital tax reforms
The Independent Authority for Public Revenue (AADE) in Greece is implementing a series of digital reforms and enforcement actions aimed at increasing tax compliance and revenue. A major component of this strategy involves the use of artificial intelligence, the integration of POS systems with myDATA, and the creation of the Real Estate Ownership and Management Registry (MIDA) to monitor property usage and taxation.
Currently, AADE is targeting approximately 55,000 taxpayers who failed to declare retroactive income or pensions received in 2020. While 87% of the relevant taxpayers have already complied, those remaining can settle their debts in up to 72 installments. Additionally, the authority has identified 34,000 taxpayers with undeclared income from short-term rentals via platforms like Airbnb, totaling approximately 105 million euros in unpaid tax base.
Looking toward 2027, the Draft Budgetary Plan submitted to the European Commission outlines a complete transformation of tax services, including the establishment of new regional tax audit centers and the expansion of digital customer registries to new sectors such as the events industry.
