AADE intensifies tax evasion crackdown using AI and drones

The Independent Authority for Public Revenue (AADE) is intensifying its crackdown on tax evasion through advanced technological integration and targeted field operations. In Mykonos, inspectors identified a kiosk in Ano Mera that failed to issue receipts for transactions exceeding €90,000 over a four-month period. This discrepancy was uncovered by cross-referencing digital myDATA records with the owner’s handwritten diary. The business was fined over €5,000 and ordered to suspend operations for two days. A second establishment, a well-known restaurant-café bar, also faced fines and a two-day shutdown for failing to issue tax documents.

To bolster enforcement, AADE is transforming its Central Operations Room in Sepolia into a modern Command Center. This upgraded hub will utilize artificial intelligence (AI), drones, and real-time geospatial platforms to coordinate field teams and analyze data from multiple sources. The new system aims to provide a unified operational picture, allowing for the real-time monitoring of inspection targets and forces across Greece.

Additionally, AADE is expanding its reach to target large-scale tax debtors and international tax avoidance. The authority is launching efforts to locate assets of major debtors held abroad through international cooperation and specialized agencies. It is also scrutinizing invoices from Greek companies dealing with 42 jurisdictions that maintain preferential tax regimes, ensuring such transactions are not used for profit shifting.
