Aadhaar app surpasses 50 million downloads in India

The Aadhaar app has surpassed 50 million downloads, signaling a growing shift toward digital-first identity services in India. Developed by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), the app allows residents to manage various identity-related tasks via smartphone, including updating mobile numbers, addresses, and email details, as well as managing biometric locks and downloading e-Aadhaar documents.

Data indicates that over 60 lakh residents have updated their mobile numbers, 15 lakh have updated addresses, and 23 lakh have updated email information through the platform. The app operates on a ‘Show, Share and Verify’ principle, intended to provide users with greater control over how their identity information is shared.

In addition to app growth, UIDAI is expanding its offline verification ecosystem. Since January, more than 200 entities have been onboarded as Offline Verification Seeking Entities (OVSEs). This framework supports secure, consent-based, and paperless verification using methods like QR code-based checks, reducing the need for real-time access to central databases and enhancing user privacy.
