Aadhaar identity services update rules for mobile linking and name changes
The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has updated procedures for managing Aadhaar identity details, including mobile number linking and name changes.
To link a mobile number to an Aadhaar card, residents can utilize online services through the Indian Postal Service website. This process involves submitting personal details and requesting an OTP. Following the online request, a verification officer visits the applicant's address to complete the update using a mobile biometric device for iris, fingerprint, or photograph verification.
Regarding name updates, the UIDAI has implemented a revised Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) that categorizes name changes into several types, such as minor spelling corrections, data-entry errors, marriage or divorce-related updates, and major name changes. Documentation requirements vary by category; for instance, minor capitalization or punctuation corrections may not require supporting documents, whereas a complete name change requires a Gazette notification and an existing identity document.
