Aalesund players dispute VAR penalty in cup final loss to Brann
Controversy has erupted following the cup final between Aalesund and Brann, which ended in a 1–3 defeat for Aalesund. The dispute centers on a penalty decision awarded to Brann after a VAR review.
Aalesund top scorer Katarina Dybvik Sunde criticized the decision, suggesting that Brann attacker Lauren Davidson attempted to exaggerate contact with defender Casandra Lüthcke. Dybvik Sunde stated, “I would rather have given a yellow card for diving than a penalty there.” Aalesund coach Martin Lindmark also expressed uncertainty regarding the VAR intervention.
Conversely, Brann player Lauren Davidson, who was named player of the match, defended the outcome. Brann coach Lauren Kaminski supported the decision, noting that VAR determined the penalty. The incident has prompted broader discussions within the Toppserien regarding refereeing quality and the consistency of VAR usage in Norwegian football.
