Aalten municipality designates three locations for asylum seeker center
The municipality of Aalten has identified three potential locations for a new asylum seeker center (AZC). The decision comes as the municipality currently fails to meet its obligations under the national distribution law (spreidingswet), which requires municipalities to contribute to the spread of asylum reception across the Netherlands.
Alderman Joop Wikkerink has stated that the establishment of the center is no longer up for debate, as the municipality must comply with legal requirements. While the specific location and design of the facility remain open to discussion, the municipal executive considers the arrival of asylum seekers a certainty.
Local residents remain divided on the issue. Some community members support the center, citing humanitarian reasons or the efficient use of land, while others express concerns regarding public safety and the potential scale of the facility.
