Aalto Works architectural collection named UNESCO World Heritage site

The “Aalto Works,” a collection of 13 architectural sites designed by Alvar Aalto in collaboration with Aino Aalto and Elissa Aalto, has been officially inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. These sites represent a unique form of “human-centric modernism” that emphasizes harmony with nature, light, and daily life.

Located across Finland, the collection includes five sites in Helsinki: the Finlandia Hall, the Aalto House, the Aalto Studio, the KELA headquarters, and the House of Culture. Other significant locations include the Paimio Sanatorium, the Villa Mairea, the Sunila Pulp Mill Residential Area, the Three Crosses Church, and the Säynätsalo Town Hall.

These structures range from cultural landmarks and administrative buildings to experimental residences and industrial communities. The designation recognizes how the Aaltos redefined modern architecture by prioritizing human well-being and environmental integration. This addition brings the total number of UNESCO World Heritage sites in Finland to eight.
