Aamir Khan denies Sonam Wangchuk inspired 3 Idiots, sparks backlash

Aamir Khan told reporters at the London Indian Film Festival that his 2009 film *3 Idiots* was not based on Ladakh educator Sonam Wangchuk, calling the connection a “misconception”. He added, “I didn’t know about Mr Sonam at that time when we were doing this film… however, what Mr Sonam is doing is good work in any case.”

The remark triggered criticism on social media and from Indian politicians. RJD MP Manoj Jha questioned the timing, while senior Congress leader Husain Dalwai suggested Khan was “scared”. Activist Prashant Bhushan described Khan as a “pale shadow” of his earlier, more outspoken self. Journalist Yogesh Pawar argued the actor’s reversal could damage his credibility.

Wangchuk is currently on a hunger strike in Delhi demanding Ladakh statehood and action on a NEET paper‑leak scandal, raising concerns about his health that Khan also referenced, saying, “We hope that it ends well and he looks after his health.”
