Aam Aadmi Party suspends Punjab MLA over school teacher shortage claims

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has suspended Maur MLA Sukhveer Singh Maiserkhana from its primary membership, citing “anti-party activities and indiscipline.” The move follows a social media video in which Maiserkhana expressed frustration over severe teacher shortages in government schools within his constituency.

Maiserkhana claimed he had repeatedly raised these concerns with party leadership, including Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, without resolution. He specifically highlighted issues at a School of Eminence, stating that the lack of staff was negatively impacting students' education.

The AAP has contested these claims, asserting that Maiserkhana disseminated false information to damage the party's reputation. Regarding the specific school mentioned, the party stated that official records show 25 out of 30 sanctioned teaching posts are currently filled, contradicting the MLA's assertions of a critical shortage.

The suspension has triggered political criticism. Pargat Singh, the Punjab Congress president, condemned the decision as “dictatorship,” alleging that the ruling party is unwilling to face ground realities. Opposition groups have also used the incident to question the AAP government's claims regarding educational reforms in the state.
