Aardappeldemodag 2026 brings potato industry together in Westmaas
The 17th Aardappeldemodag, an industry event organized by Wageningen UR, the Dutch Potato Organization (NAO), and the Association of the Potato Processing Industry (VAVI), took place in Westmaas. The biennial event drew 4,500 visitors and featured over 120 exhibitors, including mechanization companies and a new ‘Startup Place’ for emerging businesses.
Discussions focused on a volatile market year. Following a difficult season, the market for stored potatoes saw a sudden resurgence due to summer drought conditions. Richard Harrison, director of the Plant Science Group at Wageningen UR, noted that potato prices shifted rapidly from -2 cents to +20 cents. Additionally, Wageningen UR is conducting field trials to develop potato varieties resistant to late blight (phytophthora), which Harrison described as practical tools for farmers rather than ‘miracle cures’.
Other industry developments noted include the acquisition of consumer potato sales from Q Potato Holland BV by Polder Potato Holland BV.
