Aarhus civil society organizations form alliance amid budget concerns

Twenty-eight voluntary civil society organizations have formed the Civilsamfundets Sociale Alliance Aarhus. The alliance aims to demonstrate the value of diverse social initiatives for citizens in difficult life situations and to secure influence over the future conditions of civil society in the city.

The formation of the alliance follows a restructuring plan for the social sector adopted by Aarhus Municipality in the spring, which is expected to result in budget cuts for many of the 28 participating organizations.

Metin Lindved Aydin, the Councilor for Health and Care, has issued a warning regarding upcoming budget challenges. Due to a national health reform beginning in 2027, the municipality faces a significant financial gap. While Aarhus will transfer tasks worth approximately 148 million DKK to the regions, it is expected to see a reduction of 281 million DKK in state block grants, leading to an estimated annual loss of 109 million DKK for the Health and Care sector starting in 2029.
