Aarhus cycling fatality sparks debate over mandatory e-bike helmet laws

The death of a 16-year-old girl, Mariah, following an electric bicycle accident in Aarhus has sparked a political debate regarding mandatory helmet laws in Denmark. The accident occurred on October 2 on a cycle path at Vestre Strandallé in the Risskov district. Reports indicate that Aarhus Municipality had been warned about a bump on the path three months prior to the incident.

In response to the tragedy, the political party Moderaterne has proposed making helmets compulsory for electric bicycle users, citing the increased speed and weight of e-bikes compared to traditional bicycles. Sten Larsen, the party's health spokesperson, intends to discuss these potential legislative changes with transport officials. Currently, helmet use is not mandatory for cyclists or e-bike riders in Denmark, though it is required for electric scooters and skateboards. The Cyclist Federation (Cyklistforbundet) opposes the mandatory helmet requirement for e-bikes.
