Aarhus University beer relay featured in new DR documentary
The DR documentary series ‘Den sidste fest’ explores contemporary Danish student life through the lens of Kapsejladsen, a massive beer relay competition held annually at Aarhus University. The event, which draws approximately 35,000 spectators, involves students competing in rubber boats on a lake after consuming beer, all vying for the trophy ‘Det gyldne bækken’.
Beyond the spectacle, the series uses the competition to profile the diverse experiences of eight students. It examines themes of social belonging, academic pressure, and the integration of international students into Danish university culture. One co-founder of the event, now a senior physician, noted that organizing such traditions demonstrates an ability to look beyond one's own career to contribute to a community.
