Aaron Sorkin reveals why David Fincher will not direct ‘The Social Reckoning’

Screenwriter Aaron Sorkin has revealed that David Fincher was his first choice to direct ‘The Social Reckoning’, the follow-up to ‘The Social Network’. However, due to Fincher’s exclusive contract with Netflix and his involvement in ‘The Further Mis-Adventures of Cliff Booth’, the collaboration could not take place.

Sorkin, who is now directing the film himself, noted that timing was a critical factor. He wanted to avoid a release date following the U.S. midterm elections due to the film’s political themes and its focus on social media. Sorkin stated, “I was my own second choice for director.”

While not a direct sequel, ‘The Social Reckoning’ explores the consequences of Facebook’s operations, specifically focusing on algorithms, misinformation, and psychological impacts. The story centers on journalists and whistleblowers, including Frances Haugen. Jeremy Strong will portray Mark Zuckerberg, a role previously played by Jesse Eisenberg. Fincher has reportedly read the script and expressed support for the project.
