Aaron Strachan given lifelong restriction after Edinburgh rape and escape

Aaron Strachan, a 21‑year‑old, was convicted at the High Court in Edinburgh for abducting and raping a 15‑year‑old girl on 25 May 2025. The attack was carried out after he followed the teenager from a bus stop, threatened her with a knife while wearing a balaclava, and forced her into a basement on York Place, where he blocked the door with wooden pallets before raping her. DNA evidence linked Strachan to the crime and he was later identified.

Strachan also pleaded guilty to stabbing a man’s hand with a knife on the same day and to striking another man on the head with a claw hammer on 28 May 2025. At sentencing he received an Order for Lifelong Restriction (OLR) – a minimum five‑year term with the possibility of parole only if a board deems him no longer a danger, meaning he may never be released. His name was entered on the sex offenders register indefinitely.

In January 2026, while being led from the Court of Session to a prison van, Strachan slipped his handcuffs and escaped. A city‑wide police search resulted in his recapture a few hours later. Judge Michael O’Grady described the crimes as “the stuff of nightmares” and labeled them “truly bestial”.
