Aave launches tokenized stock lending on Base network

Aave has launched its Equities Hub on the Base network, allowing users to use tokenized stocks from Coinbase as collateral to borrow USDC. The market includes seven major technology stocks: Apple, Amazon, Alphabet, Meta, Microsoft, Nvidia, and Tesla.

The new lending market has a $21 million USDC borrowing cap and a $32 million USDC supply cap. While the integration aims to bridge traditional finance with decentralized lending, it introduces a structural risk known as the “weekend gap.” Because Chainlink price oracles freeze stock prices from Friday evening until Sunday evening (Eastern Time) to match traditional market closures, the protocol cannot react to real-time price volatility in the underlying equities during the weekend.

This delay means that if a stock's value drops significantly over the weekend, the protocol may not be able to trigger liquidations until Monday, potentially exposing USDC lenders to bad debt.

Separately, Aave's governance and founder Stani Kulechov are discussing Aavenomics 3.0, which may include a token burn mechanism to permanently reduce the AAVE supply, moving beyond the current buyback model. These developments have contributed to a recent surge in AAVE's market price.
