Aavin milk prices under review as private dairies raise rates in Tamil Nadu
The Tamil Nadu Milk Agents Workers Welfare Association has called on the state government to review retail milk prices for the cooperative brand Aavin. The request comes as private dairy companies, including Heritage, Tirumala, Jersey, and Arokya, increase their retail prices by up to ₹4 per litre and curd prices by up to ₹2 per kilogram.
Association president Ponnusamy stated that private dairies raised the prices paid to farmers following a ₹6 per litre increase in Aavin’s procurement price. The association warns that a widening price gap between private brands and Aavin could drive consumers toward the cooperative, potentially worsening existing milk shortages across the state.
According to the association, Aavin is currently losing an average of more than ₹15 per litre because its retail prices have not been adjusted to reflect rising procurement costs. The group is urging government intervention to protect the cooperative’s financial stability and ensure consistent milk availability for consumers.
