Aavin milk sales decline in Chennai amid green packet shortage

Aavin milk sales in Chennai have declined by 10 to 15 per cent over the last six months due to an acute shortage of the highly preferred green milk packets. The shortage, which has intensified since August, has left many consumers unable to meet their daily requirements through the Tamil Nadu government-owned dairy cooperative.

Milk agents attribute the supply disruption to inadequate milk procurement by the cooperative, noting that purchase volumes have not increased to match steady consumer demand. The scarcity is not limited to Chennai; similar shortages have been reported in the Coimbatore, Tiruchirappalli, Madurai, Salem, and Erode districts.

As a result of the shortage, consumers are often forced to purchase more expensive private dairy brands. There have also been allegations of overcharging by small grocery shops, with some retailers reportedly selling half-litre green packets for Rs 24 instead of the official price of Rs 22.
