Aazaar Abdul-Rahim named interim Maryland football head coach

Aazaar Abdul-Rahim has been appointed as the interim head coach of the University of Maryland football program for the remainder of the season. The decision follows the dismissal of former head coach Michael Locksley. Abdul-Rahim, a Washington, D.C. native and current defensive coordinator, has been with the program for six seasons in various coaching capacities.

Maryland athletic director Jim Smith addressed the coaching transition during a press conference, noting that the university is receiving significant interest from coaching agencies. Smith emphasized that the search for a permanent successor will focus on candidates who can connect with the local community and understand the importance of the DMV area. While Abdul-Rahim will lead the team for the final five games, Smith indicated he would be considered for the permanent position.

The coaching change has also impacted the program's recruiting efforts. While some recruits, such as three-star wide receiver Kyren Caldwell and safety Kevin Jackson, have reaffirmed their commitments to the Terps, others, including offensive tackle Caleb Canty, have decommitted following the leadership shift.
