AB de Villiers clarifies Kohli and Tendulkar comparison

South African cricket legend AB de Villiers has clarified his recent comments regarding Virat Kohli and Sachin Tendulkar following backlash from fans. The controversy arose after de Villiers suggested that while Tendulkar was a pioneer who proved subcontinental batters could succeed in difficult overseas conditions, Kohli eventually raised the bar by developing a different dynamic, specifically in handling short-pitched bowling.

In his clarification, de Villiers emphasized that his remarks were intended to highlight the unique impact each player had on Indian cricket rather than declaring one superior to the other. He noted that Tendulkar set the foundation by showing younger players they could perform consistently worldwide, whereas Kohli influenced the next generation through his fitness, leadership, and ability to counter seam and bounce. De Villiers also acknowledged that Kohli’s overseas statistics are not necessarily better than Tendulkar’s, citing Kohli’s challenges in England.
