ABA League appoints new referees following compensation dispute

The ABA League is facing a significant organizational crisis following a dispute with its officiating staff. After the first round of competition was postponed, negotiations between league leadership and 63 referees failed to reach an agreement regarding financial compensation.

Referees, represented by attorney Danijel Papak, initially requested 800 euros per game, while the league offered 630 euros. Although a compromise of 700 euros was proposed, the league ultimately rejected a counter-proposal from the referees that included additional terms such as changes to regulations and increased travel and meal allowances.

In response to the deadlock, ABA League President Ostoja Mijailović announced that the league would move forward by appointing a new officiating list. Miguel Angel Perez, President of the Referee Commission, has begun forming this new roster through an open application process. While some reports suggest the league is stabilizing, the dispute has raised concerns about potential lawsuits for damages from clubs such as Dubai, Slovan Bratislava, Vienna, and Cluj if the season is further disrupted.
