ABAE implements satellite monitoring for Venezuelan watersheds

The Bolivarian Agency for Space Activities (ABAE) in Venezuela is implementing a satellite monitoring project to evaluate 14 high-priority hydrographic basins. The initiative focuses on areas critical for drinking water production and hydroelectric power generation.

Researcher Víctor Navarro stated that the study analyzes surface coverage changes over a five-year period, specifically targeting regions affected by human intervention, primary forest degradation, and sediment accumulation. The monitored basins span several states, including Lara, Sucre, Amazonas, and Bolívar, as well as areas near Valencia, San Felipe, and Barinas.

The agency aims to provide data to competent authorities to help mitigate environmental degradation and ensure long-term water resource availability.
