Abanca acquires British Council headquarters in Madrid
Abanca has reached an agreement to purchase the British Council headquarters in Madrid, located on Paseo del General Martínez Campos in the Chamberí district. The complex, which spans over 4,000 square meters across two connected buildings—a historic palace and a training facility—will serve as the bank’s flagship building in the Spanish capital.
Abanca intends to use the site to support its strategic plan for the Madrid metropolitan area, focusing on corporate segments and wealth management. The institution also plans to utilize the space for social, educational, and cultural activities through its Obra Social and Afundación.
Following the sale, the British Council will transition its operations to a new location at Calle Fortuny 41. Starting in 2027, the organization will adopt a decentralized model in the Chamberí district, distributing its English language teaching, certification, and institutional functions across various specialized spaces to better meet its educational and cultural mission in Spain.
