Abandoned settlements serve as reminders of past human activity
Various locations around the world serve as silent reminders of former human activity, having been abandoned due to environmental disasters or economic shifts.
In Ukraine, Pripyat remains a prominent example of a settlement displaced by the 1986 Chernobyl nuclear accident. Once home to approximately 50,000 residents, the city was evacuated due to radiation risks, leaving behind schools, apartment buildings, and parks.
In Namibia, the town of Kolmanskop experienced a boom following the discovery of diamonds in 1908. The settlement included houses, hospitals, and schools, but was eventually abandoned in 1956 as diamond resources depleted and mining shifted to more productive areas.
