Abano Terme: Europe’s ancient thermal spa tradition

The Euganean Thermal District in the Veneto region of Italy, specifically the towns of Abano Terme and Montegrotto Terme, maintains a bathing tradition spanning over 2,000 years. Located at the foot of the Euganean Hills near Padua, the area is recognized as one of Europe’s oldest and most significant thermal centers.

The thermal water originates as rainwater in the Alps near Verona, traveling approximately 80 kilometers through rock for 25 to 60 years before emerging through volcanic vents in the Po Valley. This process provides the water with geothermal heat and a high mineral content, chemically classified as salt-bromine-iodine hyperthermal water.

In addition to the warm waters, the region is noted for its medicinal mud, known as fango, which is used in various therapeutic treatments. While historically frequented by figures such as Galileo Galilei, the area continues to serve as a major destination for wellness and health-oriented tourism.
