ABB and ETM partner on Transverse Flux Motor technology for data centers
ABB has expanded its partnership with Electric Torque Machines (ETM), a subsidiary of Graco Inc., to develop and commercialize motors based on ETM’s patented Transverse Flux Motor (TFM) technology. These motors are specifically designed for data center cooling applications, such as large cooling fans, pumps, and heat rejection towers.
The TFM technology utilizes a direct-drive architecture that generates high torque at low speeds. This design aims to provide simpler, more reliable cooling infrastructure with lower energy consumption, reduced maintenance requirements, and decreased noise levels. The technology is intended to address the increasing cooling demands of high-density data centers, particularly those driven by the rapid growth of AI-focused facilities.
As global data center electricity demand rose by 17% in 2025, with AI-related facilities growing by 50%, the partnership positions ABB to provide mission-critical cooling solutions that optimize total cost of ownership and energy efficiency.
