ABB expands energy infrastructure role with nuclear and AI data center projects
ABB is expanding its role in critical energy infrastructure through several major technological initiatives. The company has been tasked by Ansaldo Nucleare to modernize the control and safety systems for Block 1 of the Cernavodă Nuclear Power Plant in Romania. This project aims to extend the reactor's operational lifespan by 30 years. The plant is a vital component of Southeast European energy supply, currently accounting for 18 to 20 percent of Romania's total electricity generation.
In the technology sector, ABB has launched 'Infinitus', a new portfolio of direct current (DC) power supply systems designed for AI data centers. To address the massive energy demands of AI chips, the system utilizes 800V DC to reduce conversion steps, energy loss, and space requirements. ABB is collaborating with Nvidia to develop these power systems for large-scale AI facilities. The company estimates that by 2030, between 25 and 40 percent of new data center capacity could utilize DC technology.
Additionally, ABB has partnered with Ferrari Hypersail to serve as the electrification partner for a 100-foot foiling yacht project. The vessel will be powered entirely by regenerative energy using an ABB-supplied DC microgrid system.
