ABB launches Infinitus DC power portfolio for AI data centers

ABB has launched ‘Infinitus’, an integrated direct current (DC) power portfolio designed to meet the surging energy demands of AI data centers. The source-to-rack architecture aims to improve energy efficiency, reduce the physical footprint of power infrastructure, and increase capacity for computing equipment.

As AI rack power requirements are projected to rise from 200 kW to over 1 MW, ABB is focusing on 800V DC distribution. This approach reduces the number of power conversion stages compared to traditional AC systems, thereby lowering heat loss. A joint report by ABB and Boston Consulting Group suggests that DC distribution could improve energy efficiency by more than 5%. For a 500 MW data center, this efficiency gain could provide an additional 25 MW of capacity for IT loads, potentially representing over $300 million in annual revenue.

The Infinitus portfolio utilizes solid-state transformer (SST) technology and includes five core solutions: high-voltage powertrains, AC-to-DC conversion, DC distribution, DC power protection, and cooling optimization. ABB expects that 25% to 40% of new data center capacity installed by 2030 may adopt DC distribution methods.
