ABB partners with Ferrari Hypersail for renewable yacht project
ABB has entered into a technology partnership with Ferrari Hypersail to support the development of a 100-foot oceanic full-foiling monohull yacht. The vessel is designed to use foils to lift the hull above the water, allowing it to travel at high speeds using entirely renewable energy.
As the electrification partner, ABB will provide expertise in marine power, energy storage, and intelligent monitoring. The collaboration specifically focuses on advancing Direct Current (DC) technology, utilizing ABB’s experience to develop advanced 800 VDC power systems. The project aims to test the resilience and efficiency of these electrical architectures in extreme offshore environments, which could provide insights for the development of next-generation industrial microgrids.
Project leader Enrico Voltolini noted that ABB’s expertise is a valuable operational advantage for a vessel that must remain self-sufficient for several weeks in demanding ocean conditions. Ferrari has not yet announced a launch date for the boat.
