ABB returns to utility-scale solar and storage market

ABB is returning to the utility-scale power electronics market for solar energy and storage through the integration of Gamesa Electric. The process, expected to be completed by the end of 2025, aims to strengthen the company’s presence in photovoltaic (PV) and energy storage sectors by combining industrial capacity, technological development, and a global service network.

Juan Barandiaran, Operations & Service Manager of Renewable Power at ABB, noted that the integration is moving quickly due to ABB’s existing expertise in power electronics, particularly in wind energy converters. This move marks ABB’s return to the photovoltaic inverter and utility-scale storage business after a decade-long absence.

According to Barandiaran, the market landscape has shifted significantly since ABB last participated in this segment. While the market was previously dominated by smaller companies and focused primarily on capital expenditure (CAPEX), current and future requirements favor manufacturers with large-scale industrial and financial stability. Customers are increasingly prioritizing bankability, technology continuity, and long-term support over initial equipment costs.
