ABB to supply control technology for Japan’s hydrogen terminal
ABB Ltd has been selected by Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Ltd. to provide its ABB Ability™ System 800xA distributed control system for the Kawasaki LH2 Terminal in Ogishima, Japan. Located approximately 30 kilometers south of Tokyo, the terminal is designed to be the world’s first facility capable of scaling liquefied hydrogen supply from pilot projects to a commercial level.
The project, known as the Liquefied Hydrogen Supply Chain Commercialization Demonstration, is supported by Japan Suiso Energy, Ltd. and the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) via its Green Innovation Fund. The facility will feature a 50,000 m³ liquefied hydrogen storage tank and infrastructure for liquefaction, cargo handling, hydrogen gas supply, and lorry dispatch.
ABB’s technology will integrate process control, safety, and operational data into a single environment. The scope includes a SIL 3 safety instrumented system and redundant AC 800M controllers to ensure reliable operation and high availability across the terminal’s critical processes. The demonstration phase is expected to conclude by 2030, supporting Japan’s goal of establishing an international liquefied hydrogen supply chain.
