Abbateggio mining site cleanup triggers 800,000 euro forced withdrawal

Authorities are initiating a forced withdrawal of 800,000 euros from the Abruzzo regional budget to fund the permanent safety remediation of the former Imbocco Pilone mining site in Abbateggio.

Antonio Di Marco, Vice President of the Regional Commission for Environment and Territory, announced that the measure follows repeated failures by the regional administration to provide necessary economic coverage. Despite legal mandates, including a Council of State ruling and regional law, funding for the site's cleanup has remained stalled.

The Commissioner ad acta, Caterina Di Paolo, will now exercise powers granted by the Council of State to draw funds directly from regional budget chapters to cover the required amount. Di Marco has indicated that the regional government will be asked to account for delays and administrative inertia before the Court of Auditors.
