Abbazia di Novacella winery receives FairChoice certification
The Abbazia di Novacella winery has achieved the FairChoice certification following a two-year initiative to improve its environmental, social, and economic sustainability. The German standard, which underwent an independent audit, will be officially valid for the 2025 harvest, though the FairChoice logo will appear on bottles starting with the current harvest.
Key improvements include the use of 410-gram glass bottles, which saves approximately 60 tons of glass annually and reduces transport-related CO2 emissions by 16%. Additionally, a 145 kWp photovoltaic system was implemented to cover roughly half of the winery's energy needs, and electric vehicles are being used for various operational tasks.
Director Werner Waldboth stated that sustainability is central to the winery's nearly 900-year history, noting that the FairChoice process provides a structured and verifiable way to address modern environmental challenges.
