Abbe Lane, 93, Iconic Cha‑Cha‑Cha Singer and Actress, Dies in Los Angeles

Abbe Lane, born Abigail Francine Lassman on 14 December 1932 in Brooklyn, died of natural causes on 25 April 2024 at her home in Los Angeles, aged 93. Her son Steven Leff confirmed the death to The Hollywood Reporter.

She was discovered by Latin‑band leader Xavier Cugat, married him in 1952, and became the featured vocalist of his orchestra, popularising the cha‑cha‑cha, mambo and rumba in Europe and the United States. After divorcing Cugat twelve years later, she married music‑industry agent Perry Leff, who died in 2020.

In the 1950s and 1960s Lane appeared in more than twenty Italian films, working with stars such as Totò, Vittorio De Sica and Alberto Sordi, and featured on numerous U.S. television variety and game shows. She is survived by her sons Steven and Andrew and a granddaughter.
