Abbotsford hosts Ukrainian Independence Day celebration

Approximately 300 people gathered in Abbotsford on August 22 to celebrate Ukrainian Independence Day. Organized by RIY Vancouver, a volunteer group supporting Ukraine, the event marked the 35th anniversary of the country declaring independence from the Soviet Union.

The celebration began at Abbotsford City Hall and moved to Mill Lake Park, featuring traditional Ukrainian food, music, and folk dancing. Local officials, including Abbotsford Deputy Mayor Dave Sidhu and Chilliwack Mayor Ken Popove, attended the festivities.

Representatives from three churches held a joint prayer to address the ongoing war with Russia. Organizers noted that the event served to foster community and unity during a difficult period for Ukraine.
