Abby Lee Miller criticizes ‘ungrateful’ former ‘Dance Moms’ stars

Dance instructor Abby Lee Miller has criticized former cast members of the Lifetime series ‘Dance Moms,’ labeling them ‘ungrateful’ for describing the show and their experiences as ‘toxic.’ In a recent interview with KTLA, the 60-year-old instructor claimed that many of the former contestants would not have achieved their current professional success without the show or her personal influence through the Abby Lee Dance Company.

Miller defended her role in launching careers in the dance industry, noting that several of her students have found success on Broadway and within the professional industry. She suggested that the former dancers should express gratitude for the education and opportunities provided by her studio.

Responses from former cast members have been mixed. Kendall Vertes stated during a 2024 reunion that the show served as a ‘stepping stone’ for their current identities. Conversely, Nia Sioux has addressed the show’s impact in her 2025 memoir, noting that being the only Black dancer during certain periods had ‘lasting effects’ due to problematic remarks made by Miller.
