ABC apologises for airing fictional attack on mining magnate Gina Rinehart

The Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) issued a public apology after a July 12 episode of its reality series “Race Around the World” aired a four‑minute video that depicted a fictional, sexualised violent attack on billionaire mining magnate Gina Rinehart. ABC managing director Hugh Marks said the segment fell short of community expectations, although the Australian Media Ombudsman found no breach of the broadcaster’s editorial policies. The video has been removed from ABC platforms and the corporation will amend its editorial guidance on violence.

The apology follows legal notice from Rinehart’s company, Hancock Prospecting, which alleged that ABC breached multiple Australian criminal and civil laws by continuing to publish the segment.
